Geocache Description:

**This cache is not available at night!!**
**The area is designated as "Day Use Only."**
**If you decide to go out here at night; I will not be responsible for any interactions between you and law enforcement....or ghosts!**
**There is a simple field puzzle involved that involves basic addition/subtraction.**
**A "must read" on cemetery etiquette.**

The Old Muscogee Cemetery sits on a small hill, east of the Perdido River, just off of River Annex Rd, in an area known these days as Cantonment(pronounced Can-tone-ment by locals). The cemetery itself is named after the town of Muscogee, FL., which was founded in 1857, by a group of lumbermen from the Muscogee Lumber Company. In its heyday, the logging camps and four lumber mills employed over 1,000 men from the area. In 1928, the town and the surrounding acreage were sold to a company from Defuniak Springs. At that time, the population was between three and four hundred people. The residents slowly moved away from the area to find better jobs and futures.
The history of the cemetery itself is a bit more unclear. It is believed to have been used by the Seminole Indians before being used by the town; starting in the late 1800's. The oldest visible grave site has a death date of 1889. Most people believe there were earlier burials here, as well. Those would have had wooden markers that most likely rotted away close to a hundred years ago.
Unfortunately, over the years, the area has been subjected to widespread vandalism and neglect. But, in December of 2008, a full survey and restoration of the area was done by volunteers. From the data collected by the volunteers; a map was created showing the positions of the seventy one names that withstood the vandalism and years of Mother Nature. That map has been turned into a nice informational sign(where you'll begin your search for this cache).

There is also a bit more 'history' of this cemetery. But it is of the paranormal variety. I will only tell the story if you promise not to go out there at night. Understood? Good. Read on:
Over the years a story has emerged that the cemetery is haunted by a woman who was hanged for an unknown reason. It is said that if you park there at night and flash your lights three times; you can see her ghost and hear her scream. The legend also says the reason for the ghost sightings is that the cemetery was never hallowed by a preacher. Therefore, the spirits are unable to rest. I've heard a slight variation of the story, though. Apparently the resident ghost's husband was to be interred here as well. But his remains never made it to the cemetery. He was said to have been cremated; and that his ashes are just a short distance away from the actual cemetery. The reason for this is still unknown to this day. Your job is to find his ashes, sign the logbook and set the poor lady's soul free!
