Geocache Description:

A Turkish Bath (Turkish: Hamam) is the Turkish variant of a steam bath, sauna or Russian bath, distinguished by a focus on water, as distinct from ambient steam. The process involved in taking a Turkish Hamam is similar to that of a sauna, but is more closely related to ancient Greek and ancient Roman bathing practices.

Bu kutu bir MİMAR SİNAN ÜÇLEMESİ parçasıdır. Mimar Sinan eserlerinde saklı olan 3 farklı kutuyu (Mosque by TOPHANE, RÜSTEMPAŞA Mosque, ŞEHZADE Mosque) bulduğunuzda elde edeceğiniz şifreler ile bir "BONUS" kutuya ulaşabilirsiniz.

This cache is a part of the ARCHITECT SINAN TRILOGY. When you have found 3 different caches, hidden by the works of the great architect Sinan (Mosque by TOPHANE, RÜSTEMPAŞA Mosque, ŞEHZADE Mosque), you will get the codes to find a "BONUS" cache.

The hamam combines the functionality and the structural elements of its predecessors in Anatolia, the Roman thermae and baths, with the Central Asian Turkic tradition of steam bathing, ritual cleansing and respect of water.

Several accessories from Roman times survive in modern hamams, such as the peştemal (a special cloth of silk and/or cotton to cover the body, like a pareo), nalın (wooden clogs that prevent slipping on the wet floor, or mother-of-pearl), kese (a rough mitt for massage), and sometimes jewel boxes, gilded soap boxes, mirrors, henna bowls and perfume bottles.

The Tahtakale Hamamı is no more a working bath, but here you can see the architecture of a Hamam building very good without getting wet. Also the surrounding provides many interesting spots. A colorful wood and toy market or the famous RÜSTEMPAŞA Mosque with tiles from the 16th century are only meters away.

The Tahtakale Hamamı includes now a lot of shops but the cache is in the second room, straight after the main entrance, at same level, where are no shops. If the door between the rooms is closed, you can go from the first room downstairs, pass the closed section and then go upstairs to the room where the cache is. You can take nice photos from the dome and look for the stairs at the left side. The building is only open between 09:00 and 17:30 on workdays, on saturday till 14:00 and closed on sundays and holidays.
