In the 1086 Domesday Book Southrey was listed as "Sutrei" and consisted of 11 households.
Part of the Bardney group of Parish churches
Sitting on the banks of the River Witham the village of Southrey, some 12 miles from Lincoln, boasts a beautiful and unusal little church dedicated to St.John the Divine. Far from being a typical English country church it looks more like something that has been transported from the Australian outback. . It was erected as a temporary place of worship.
This church was completed on May 4th 1898 by the parishoners themselves, It was a great triumph of dedication and community spirit, as the land was donated by local farmer, Mr J E Welby, and the voluntary labour was supplied by the villagers, under the supervision of local joiner, Mr Richard Turner. The neat little gabled and bellcoted timber building is painted white without and sky blue within and stands on a plinth incorporating gravestones from the nearby ruins of Bardney Abbey.
