Geocache Description:

A letterbox Hybrid hidden on the old Mount Ord Road. In addition to the normal logbook and trade items, it also contains a letterbox stamp, inkpad, and stamp book. Please do not remove the stamp, ink pad, or stamp book. THEY ARE NOT TRADE ITEMS!

Gondolin, or Ondolindë (Quenya, or high eleven) was a city established in the valley of Tumladen on the hill of Amon Gwareth. Its walls stood high and white above the plain, and its most prominent feature was the great Tower of the King. It was one of the greatest cities of the first age, and was built by the high eleven King Turgon (great grandfather of Elrond). It was finally betrayed and destroyed before the end of the first age.

While the city of Gondolin can no longer be found, there are remnants of an old wall near the posted coordinates. Hike up the old road past the wall, then leave at the sharp bend and look for the letterbox hybrid. You will have a 5 mile round trip hike with 1100 feet of ascent.

This is a letterbox hybrid. In addition to the normal logbook and trade items, it also contains a letterbox stamp, inkpad, and stamp book. Please do not remove the stamp, ink pad, or stamp book. THEY ARE NOT TRADE ITEMS!

Trivia note: the first writing of JRR Tolkien about the middle earth so well known today was not "The Hobbit" but actually a short story called "The Fall of Gondolin" about the founding of the city and its eventual fall. It was written in 1917 in an army barracks on the back of a sheet of military marching music.

Be sure to download other nearby caches before heading up this hill. In particular, I recommend starting on Beeline Finale http://coord.info/GC2PDGY which has a stage about 1/2 mile away
