Geocache Description:

St. John’s Co-Cathedral is located in the middle of Valletta.

It was built by the Knights of Malta between 1573 and 1578 after it was commissioned in 1572 by Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere as the conventual church of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of St. John, commonly known as the Knights of Malta.

The church is considered to be one of the finest examples of high Baroque architecture in Europe. The extremely rich baroque decoration in the interior of the church makes it one of the most spectacular cathedrals in the world. The interior was largely decorated by Mattia Preti, an artist from Calabria and a knight.

Inside the cathedral are eight chapels, each chapel representing one tongue (language or section) of the Knights.

The masterpieces ‘The Beheading of St John the Baptist’ and ‘St Jerome Writing’, painted by Caravaggio Michelangelo Merisi during his short spell in Malta, are on display in St John’s Co-Cathedral.

The name, Co-Cathedral, refers to its later, dual role. In the 1820s, the Bishop of Malta, whose seat was at Mdina, was allowed to use St John’s as an alternative, therefore the name Co-Cathedral.

It cannot be described how overwhelming the impressions on the inside of the cathedral are, so please visit the cathedral before or after you take the cache.

The cache is a nano. Stealth is required, but with a bit care it should be possible to retrieve and replace the cache without suspicious looking action.

Please log very small and only with initials. The cache is quite busy and the log sheet is tiny.
