Geocache Description:

A magnetic micro-cache hidden near a park at the start of the old road from Riyam to Muscat.

Only 50 years ago, the Sultanate of Oman had only one asphalted road, from Muttrah to Muscat. Parts of that first road ever built in Oman still exist today and provide a scenic route into the Capital.

A series of 8 caches have been hidden starting at Riyam Park and ending at the Bait Al Zubair museum in Muscat along a distance of 1.8 km. You can drive the entire road and access each cache by car, but why not leave your car behind at the Riyam Park parking area, or get there by taxi, and walk the trail of caches until you reach the Bait Al Zubair museum in Muscat? Reward yourself with a refreshment at the museum and let one of many taxis passing by return you to your starting point.

Riyam was a small fishing village which was originally only accessible by sea and by a mountain track which is subject to a separate cache: Riyam Walk GC19RKK. The first road connecting Muttrah with Muscat skirted the beach starting in Muttrah until it reached Riyam. Mountains plunging straight into the sea forced the road inland where it climbed towards a pass in the mountains, leading into Muscat. The 4-lane Corniche which today connects Muttrah with Muscat was built in the 1970's and involved quite a lot of mountain blasting.

The magnetic micro-cache is hidden next to the parking lot of Riyam Park, itself containing yet another cache: Riyam Park, GC1XTP0. The micro-cache contains a logbook and pencil only, while there is place for small GCs only. Please search using the required stealth as muggles often pass by. Please hide the cache once you have signed the log by replacing it in exactly the same place that you have found it, not visible to the casual passer-by

The next cache in the series is only a short walk down the road: Riyam to Muscat: 2. The Tree, GC44J46
Good luck with your search
