Geocache Description:

Hidden along Waimahunga / Boswell track you will find Whangarei's First Letterbox.
We have to get a few other types of caches around these parts so I have decided to create a Letterbox.

Along the way down Waimahunga/Boswell's track you will come to a swing bridge, there are three large bridges along the whole of this path but you may not even pass over one depending on your choice of path here.

When you get to the end of the Waverly street end of the swing bridge, head along a a bit further. On the hill side of the path you will find a large pile of rocks.
You will have to head up the rocks to find my Letterbox Hybrid.
When you get about 5 - 6 M start searching.
You will have to uncover the Ammo can from below a pile of rocks.
Please make sure you cover well when you replace the cache and keep your eyes peeled for muggles walking along the track.

WATCH YOUR STEP, some of the rocks are loose and you may lose your balance. We have had a cacher already fall over and badly damage her wrist.

Letterbox Hybrid: Letterboxing is another form of treasure hunting using clues instead of coordinates. In some cases, the letterbox owner has made their container both a letterbox and a geocache and posted its coordinates on Geocaching.com. There is a stamp inside this Letterbox Hybrid, it is not an item intended for trade; the stamp is meant to remain in the box so that visitors can use it to record their visit. To read more about letterboxing, visit the Letterboxing North America web site. This Letterbox is listed here:

Geocachers: Please only log in the geocaching logbook, and not in the logbook that is there for letterboxers. (also please do not remove the stamp - this is not for swapping! It is for Letterboxing!)

Letterboxers: There is my stamp and logbook for letterboxers. Please stamp this book with your stamp, and do not stamp in the logbook that is there for Geocachers. (Please do not remove the stamp from the cache.)

Experience a former railway route which passes through mangrove swamp and coastal margin on an easy grade.

What’s special about the Waimahanga walkway
These are very easy series of walks on the edge of the Onerahi township.

Boswell's Track follows the course of a disused railway line which was the link between the former wharf at Onerahi, where quarried limestone was one of the products brought ashore, and the Port Road area of Whangarei. A 300 metre timber bridge across the harbour, called the Gull Roost, linked the two during its years of operation between 1911 and 1933. A 10 metre lifting span allowed boats to pass through.

The track surface is level and metalled and suitable for less able people. The Waimahanga walkway passes through an inter-tidal zone dominated by mangroves and the associated wildlife is of special interest.

Track descriptions

The Waimahanga walkway comprises of three routes: Boswell’s Track, Waverley Street Link and the George Point Road Link.

Track--------------------- Grade -------Time------- Distance
Boswell's Track -----------2------ 45 minutes ------2.5 km
Waverley Street Link ----2 ------20 minutes ----1000 metres
George Point Road Link--2------ 10 minutes------ 150 metres

Boswell's Track

From the northern end of Waimahanga Road, Boswell's Track changes in character from bush to mangrove. After about 1 kilometre, there is a link to George Point Road. The link to Waverley Street is a 150 metres further on.

The walkway then passes over the George Point footbridge and then a further footbridge before making a left then right turn to emerge onto Cockburn Street.

Waverley Street Link

The Waverley Street Link is well marked from Boswell's Track. It crosses a quaint swing bridge and a number of boardwalks as it follows the edge of the tidal zone between bush and mangroves. The walkway emerges opposite the kindergarten.

George Point Road Link

The George Point Road Link is fairly steep with numerous steps to assist the climb. There is a bench at the top to rest and admire views over the harbour. There is a small recreational reserve to be crossed adjacent to George Point Road.

Circular walks are possible using the streets of Onerahi as links.

What to expect

These tracks are all weather and accessible to most; but the George Point Road Link does have a large number of steps. They are very popular and well used routes that are well defined and marked.
