A book of puzzles from my childhood showed the following sequence of words:
STARTLING
STARLING
STARING
STRING
STING
SING
SIN
IN

The idea was that it was possible to pick off a letter at a time, without rearranging the others, and continue to make words, clear down to a 1-letter word.
I have played with letters and words in the years since, trying to find examples that come close to this nine-letter gem. Even a six-letter success can be gratifying. A seven-letter example of a word that works is BLATHER. SHEATHED is an eight-letter example! Some geocaching-related words that work are BLINKY and STICKY. A visit to the web turned up STREAMBEDS, a real whopper at ten letters.
The cache can be found at the base of a guy wire. You will need some info from a pair of geocaching gnomes.
