Geocache Description:

Theriso  {greek "Θέρισο"} is a small Cretan village 16 kms from Chania town in the Lefka Ori mountains. This village has a remarkable history, intrinsically interwoven with the freedom and independence of the Cretan people.

The village, with its dramatic mountain scenery and gorge, sits at 580m in the massive Lefka Ori or White Mountain range in the west of Crete.

The beautiful Thériso Gorge with its dramatic scenery, which can be seen from the road as it runs along the bed of the gorge for 6 kms, accompanying the tree-lined river and surrounded by the greenery of chestnuts and oaks. Of course the gorge also makes a wonderful walk in the clean mountain air, and is popular with rock climbers and hikers.

The famous politician and statesman, Eleftherios Venizelos, born in Mournies in Chaniá prefecture in 1864, started the Thériso Revolution of 1905 in the village. The inaccessibility of the village,  enclosed by mountains, made it difficult to capture. The revolt stemmed from the dispute between Venizelos and the island's ruler, Prince George of Greece, over the island's future, in particular over the question of Cretan union with Greece.

The Theriso revolt established Eleftherios Venizelos’ fame in Crete and also in continental Greece; he would go on to serve as Prime Minister of Crete from April to September 1910. The following month, King George I invited him to become Prime Minister of Greece, an office he would hold seven times between 1910 and 1933.

Inside this small village also stands the Eleftherios Venizelos Centre for Independence and the Therisos National Resistance Museum, both of which accept visitors.

The Cache is placed in the grounds around the National Resistance Museum. Normaly no tools required, just a stone would suffice. It is NOT under stones. No diging. Just a little searching required.
Its a classic mini cache, with a improvised logbook. There is nothing else included, if you can find/make a small pen it could also fit in the container.
