Project A.P.E.

In May of 2001, 20th Century Fox, was preparing to release its summer blockbuster, “Planet of the Apes.” They wanted a publicity stunt, and saw that computer geeks everywhere seemed to be flocking to this new hobby, Geocaching. To try and capitalize on this potential market, Fox Studios formulated a “sub-plot” that had absolutely nothing to do with the movie: Renegade humans were trying to reveal an “Alternative Primate Evolution” theory by placing artifacts around the world. Code Name: Project A.P.E. In other words, Fox Studios - was placing movie artifacts in Geocaches. First ones there get the best trinkets.

PBS Kids and Jim Henson’s Dinosaur Train

The Jim Henson Company has enlisted the help of PBS stations, museums, zoos, and aquariums nationwide to hide Dinosaur Train themed geocaches. Each geocache features one of the dinosaurs found on the online Dinosaur Train Field Guide and contains educational information related to that dinosaur. Dinosaur Train is a PBS KIDS animated series produced by The Jim Henson Company that embraces and celebrates the fascination that preschoolers have with both dinosaurs and trains, while encouraging basic scientific thinking skills as the audience learns about life science, natural history and paleontology. Why Dinosaur Train and Geocaching? Geocaching encourages children to explore their surroundings, use observational skills and have an adventure right in their own neighborhood. Critical and creative thinking skills are necessary when seeking a geocache, and these cornerstones of problem solving and scientific thought are modeled and transferred to children when geocaching with an older caregiver. At the end of each Dinosaur Train episode, Dr. Scott encourages young viewers and their caregivers to: "Get outside, get into nature and make your own discoveries!" To support that call to action, through the Dinosaur Train Geocaching Initiative, The Jim Henson Company has teamed up with Geocaching.com to provide easy access to these special themed geocaches and Dinosaur Train educational resources, including information on how to make your own Dinosaur Train geocache, found on the PBS Parents website at http://www.pbsparents.org/dinosaurtrain/. How to Find a Dinosaur Train Geocache? With the help of a GPS-enabled device, each geocache will lead you to a safe, easy-to-access location. Visit the Dinosaur Train GeoTour for an up-to-date list of Dinosaur Train geocache locations.

Timberland Trail of Heroes

The Timberland Trail of Heroes Campaign was from May 18, 2011-June 11, 2011. There were 53 geocaches hidden in 6 cities across Europe (Milan, Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Brussels and London). Geocachers competing in the “Hero” challenge needed to find the geocaches, record the Hero ID codes inside, load them onto the site and hope to win a pair of Earthkeeper™ boots if they were the first to find each cache in that city. Once a geocacher had found all geocaches in that city, they had a chance to win an adventure trip to Iceland, ‘The land of Fire and Ice,’ for themselves and a friend.

Craft. It’s a word that gets tossed around a lot. Finding the right pieces, selecting each ingredient and then combining them with no shortcuts. It is the difference between making a pot of coffee and crafting the perfect cup. That is what we do. We find the best ingredients and we take the time to make things right. It is a simple philosophy. Make the things you like, look for what makes you happy, then share it. It is just like in geocaching, if you hide the kinds of caches you enjoy finding, if you take the time to craft something special, you will find an audience. At Captain Rodney’s we’ve been Geocaching nearly as long as we’ve been making our all-natural sauces, jellies and jams. We are passionate about sharing our products and our adventures and we want to be a part of yours. To share your adventure with us, snap a photo and post it on Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #CachingWithCaptainRodneys #contest. We will pick the 25 pictures that best capture the spirit of adventure and exploration for a Captain Rodney’s Prize Pack!
