Welcome to the Atlanta Prison Farm.
Active from 1945 until it's closing in 1995, it served the Atlanta area as a minimum security facility for those with ordinance and traffic offense sentences. All able-bodied prisoners worked: in the fields, on the streets, expanding the Atlanta airport, and in the kitchen. This enabled the detainees to benefit from vocational training and contribute to their own sustenance. Meals for all Fulton County Prisoners were prepared at the farm and delivered three times a day to downtown jails. Atlanta and its suburbs of approximately 500,000 did not have the homeless, vagrant, and prostitute issues that face the city today. Such people were not allowed to just stay in the streets; they were picked up and sentenced to 2-6 weeks at the Atlanta Prison Farm.
The prison compound consisted of over 300 acres of terraced farm and pasture land. The main building housed a peak of approximately 1000 prisoners. There was a large dairy barn, a canning plant, boiler room, old VD hospital, hog houses, Superintendents House, Dairy Foreman house and the new Assistant Superintendents House. Down the road was a City Sewage Disposal Plant that produced gas and electricity that furnished power to run the prison.
Today the prison farm sits abandoned and decayed. It's enjoyed by urban explorers, photography enthusiasts, and those looking for unique shot locations for music videos, photo sessions, and even movies (rumor has it that Arnold Schwarzenegger's new movie The Last Stand shot here recently as well as the newest installment of the Hunger Games.) Bring your cameras, your headlamps, and a sense of adventure. You will not forget this hidden gem.
If you can break yourself away from exploring long enough, you can work on breaking the cache and its log out from their own prisons. You are hunting a 50 cal ammo can hidden a short distance away from the main buildings. Once you find the cache you will have to "prison break" the log in order to count this hide as a find. Not signing the cache's log will result in a log deletion. Please replace both the log and cache back into their respective prisons as you found them. There is room for lots of trade items and travel bugs. Enjoy this one, we had fun placing it!
