Der ganze Höhenzug östlich der Weissen Wehe ist von Bergbau-Spuren durchsetzt, besonders der Bereich zwischen Asterbach und Thönbach-Einlauf. Unter anderem haben die Römer hier schon Erz geschürft.
Dieser Cache liegt südlich des "Schiefersiefen" genannten Einschnitts oben auf der Kuppe. Südlich des Schiefersiefens wurde Eisenerz, nördlich eher Schiefer gefunden. Demnach sind die Löcher, Schachteingänge und Abraumhalden auf bis zu ca. 200-150 Jahre zurückliegenden Erzabbau zurückzuführen. Ende der dreissiger Jahre des 20. Jh. wurde in dieser Gegend der Eisenerzabbau nochmals probeweise aufgenommen, erwies sich aber als nicht wirtschaftlich.
Die Gegend zählt zu den nicht gerade überlaufenen Ecken des Hürtgenwaldes, obwohl vom Parkplatz Glockenofen Luftlinie ca. 1800 m entfernt liegt und (eigentlich) keine grossen Höhenunterschiede zu bewältigen sind. Die Wege können aber sehr nass und matschig sein (wenn man sich nicht gerade auskennt, und weiss, welche Wege fest sind). Die letzten 300 m sind nichts für Kleinkinder oder Kinderwagen, die nicht 10-12zöllige Räder haben. Die letzten 100: Löcher, Abhänge, Schieferhalden, Klippen.
In diesem Gebiet gibt es anscheinend Leute, deren Hobbies etwas mystischen Charakter haben. Siehe das Galeriebild "merkwürdige Hobbies". Wie wir im Rheinland sagen würden "Jede Jeck ess anders".
Der Cache liegt nicht im Naturschutzgebiet, dieses beginnt aber auf der nördlichen Seite des Weges. Aber in der ganzen Gegend hier gibt es viel Wild, unter anderem eine Herde Mufflons, also Hunde an die Leine, wenn sie unbedingt mit müssen und ruhig verhalten. Wer vorhat, den Hint im Zweifelsfalle erst vor Ort zu lesen: Ich weiss nicht, wie der Handy-Empfang ist.
The entire ridge east of the Weisse Wehe Creek bears the mark of ancient mining activities, going back as far as the time of Roman occupancy.
This cache is on the hilltop south of a cut called "Schiefersiefen". South of this cut iron-containing ore, north of this cut slate was mined for in underground mining. The holes, mining shafts and excavation piles in this area probably go back to iron mining activities approx. 200-150 years ago. Interestingly, it was tried to re-evaluate the iron mines in this area during the late 30s of the 20th century, but to no commercial success.
The area is one of the less frequented ones in the forest, although parking at "Glockenofen" in Großhau brings you about as close as 1800 m (as the crow flies) and there are no relevant climbs or descents to the cache. The ways can be very muddy and wet, though (especially if you don't know which ones to take). The last 300 m are not for smaller kids or their means of wheeled transportation, unless you have a stroller with at least 10-12 inch wheels. .
Obviously (see picture "funny hobbies" in the gallery), some people with mystic hobbies visit this area and leave their fetishes. Live and let live.
Finally: This is not a nature reservation but the area north of the last path is, and is therefore protected. You are allowed to walk here, but there's a lot of wildlife including a herd of wild sheep. If you need to take your dog, keep it on the leash. Serious. Also, keep a low profile, don't shout. If you plan to decrypt the hint on location: I don't know how the mobile internet is in this area.
