The church of St. George, built in 1352 and standing in Hatley park, is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave and a lofty embattled western tower which contains 2 bells. The tower dates from the turn of the 15th century, and was probably the work of the same mason that built the towers nearby at Barton, Caldecote, Coton and Knapwell. The upper parts were remodelled in 1625.
Inside there are memorials of the family of St. George, baronets, including a brass with effigy in armour to Sir Baldwin St. George, who died in 1425. Running in a continuous line around the top of the walls and over the tower arch are a set of 28 painted shields, showing the arms of the local St George family over the ages and also various of their connections. They are divided into two groups. There are fifteen squarish shields which appear from their contents to have been made for a Sir Henry St George in about 1627. The other thirteen, which are more pointed, are later and appear have been executed at various times in the late 17th century. Some of the shields have been repainted: the RCHM notes that on two shields the Cotton arms (of Landwade and then Madingley) obscure earlier paintings of the Argentine family.
The church was restored by the late John Carbery Evans esq. J.P. and re-opened in 1878, and affords 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1569.
The church is a rather peculiar shape, because it has lost its east end (as can be seen in the pictutes above. Both Pevsner and the RCHM record a Victorian chancel, but in 1966 it was torn down. The chancel arch was part-filled in, and the upper half turned into a very plain east window. It makes St George seem rather taller than it is long.
St George is kept locked, but keyholders are clearly marked.
