Die Bahnhofsgebäude im Vinschgau entstanden um die Jahrhundertwende, als Südtirol noch Teil Österreich-Ungarns war. Nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges 1918 übernahmen die italienischen „Ferrovie dello Stato“ den Bahnbetrieb Bozen-Mals.
Aufgrund mangelnder Mittel wurden die Gebäude nie modernisiert. Erst als 1998/99 das Land Südtirol die seit 1990 stillgelegte Strecke Meran – Mals übernimmt, wurde im Zuge der Reaktivierung der Bahnlinie diese historische Industrieachitektur restauriert und als Ensemble unter Denkmalschutz gestellt.

Mals ist bis heute der Endbahnhof der Vinschger Bahn. Der Ausbau einer durchgehenden Verbindung Meran – Landeck über den Reschen ging nie weiter.
Eine Besonderheit ist der „Malser Stern“, ein Geisfünfeck oder Wendestern, auf dem anstelle der sonst üblichen Drehscheiben die Triebwagen gewendet wurden. Das Exemplar in Mals ist vollständig erhalten und seit der Reaktivierung der Vinschger Bahn 2005 für Museumsfahrten wieder nutzbar.

Le stazioni del treno Val Venosta furono costruite a cavallo del secolo, quando l´Alto Adige appartené ancora all`Austria - Ungheria. Dopo la fine della prima guerra mondiale 1918, le Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane assunsero la gestione della linea Bolzano-Malles.
Mancanti investimenti hanno prodotto la conservazione integrale delle vecchie strutture. Nel 1998/99 la Provincia di Bolzano acquisisce la linea abbandonata dal 1991. Nel corso del ripristino della linea fu ristrutturata quest’architettura industriale e sottoposta a vincolo di tutela degli insiemi.

Malles é a tutt´oggi stazione terminale della ferrovia della Val Venosta. Il collegamento ininterrotto Merano – Landeck attraverso il passo di Resia fu mai realizzato.
Una particolarità è la “stella di Malles”, una stella di inversione che permette di invertire il posizionamento della motrice al posto della consueta piattaforma girevole. La stella di inversione di Malles è interamente conservata e utilizzata in occasione dell´impiego di treni storici.

The station buildings dotted along the Venosta Valley were built after the turn of the century, when South Tyrol was still part of Austria-Hungary. After the end of World War I in 1918 the Italian railway authority assumes the rail operations.
The lack of funds ensured that railway buildings were never modernized. Only as the Provincial Authorities of Bolzano took over the since 1990 disused line, the restoration work carried out on the railway buildings brought back to life the industrial architecture and the buildings were listed as examples of cultural heritage.

Mals is still today the terminal. An uninterrupted connection Meran – Landeck over the Reschen Passs was never building.
A peculiarity is the “star of Mals” a pentagram of rails. It allows turning the railcar in place of the usual railway turntable. The star is complete extant und reused by historical rail journeys.
