St Francis, Westborough
St Francis Church Westborough was built in the 1930’s at a cost of £2,300. It was the last of four daughter churches to be built in the parish of Stoke. It was built as a chapel of ease for Emmanuel Church, Stoughton. The main benefactor was Julia Paynter, the widow of Francis Paynter, a former rector of Stoke Church.
When St Francis was consecrated it came under the care of Emmanuel Church. It was not until 1947 that the ecclesiastical district of Westborough was formed. The chapel was extended in 1957 and a church hall added at a cost of £13,000.
In 1958 an Order in Council was passed by the Privy Council, setting up Westborough as a separate statutory district. As soon as the church was completed it was consecrated and Westborough became a parish in its own right.
