Geocache Description:

This is one of ten caches placed for the 2013 Cache Across Maryland.
In celebration of the 10th Annual CAM, we are honoring the first MGS Cache Across Maryland by taking cachers back to the original 2004 CAM locations!

Each location was picked specifically by the original CAM hiders to give cachers a taste of the state and show you its beauty. By combining all ten, you'll be able to see why Maryland is truly "America in Miniature". We hope you enjoy them!

This cache is placed near the original CAM 2004 Western Maryland location GCHYTN
hidden by AdamWalworth.

You are seeking a traditional hide located within the Savage River State Forest. This cache is available dawn till dusk. Please no night caching! Dogs are allowed within the park but must be kept on a leash. The park also offers a variety of primitive camping.

The Savage River is a 30 mile long tributary of the North Branch of the Potomac River. It was named for the 18th century surveyor John Savage. The nearby Savage River Dam was built for flood control but is often used for recreation such as trout fishing and whitewater paddling when the water is released.

The Savage has been used for the U.S. Olympic Trials and was the site of the 1989 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships on June 24-25. The usual put-in for whitewater boats is 0.7 miles below the dam, where the highway crosses the river. The slalom racing section begins 0.5 miles further downstream, below the 5.0-foot-high Piedmont Dam, and ends at the viewing stand above the pedestrian suspension bridge.

The 1989 race was the only time the Slalom World Championships have been held in the United States. The next occasion will be a quarter century later in 2014, when they will be held on artificial whitewater at the nearby Adventure Sports Center International, constructed in 2007 as a more accessible alternative to the seldom-watered Savage.
