The Austin & Northwest Railroad was chartered on April 20, 1881. The goal was originally to go all the way to Abilene to join the Pacific line but it never got past Llano. Through mergers and acquisitions it changed owners several time and 1986, Southern Pacific, the last owner decided to abandon the line as non profitable. The City of Austin purchased it and gave it to Capital Metro. Today, the tracks are shared by Capitol Metro providing commuter service in the day between Leander and Austin, and Watco Companies LLC, providing freight services during the night.
The Cache is located in the woods not too far from the future "Northern Walnut Creek Trail" that should be completed in 2014. There is a primitive trail that leads to the area of the cache. Here is the GPS track for it:
Bring your own pen, the container has only room for a log and a couple of geocoins.
Warning: The trail crosses Walnut creek on both sides of the cache. Do not go after this cache when there is a flash flood warning.
If you follow the trail 50 feet northwest of the cache, you will have a nice view point to see Capitola Metro trains pass on the bridge above Walnut Creek.
