Geocache Description:

In every city there has been a central market place and in Stockholm Stortorget was the natural place as early as the 1300s. The market were not permanent, it were held during restricted period of the year, Thomasmässotiden around December 20. This be said to be the origin of the Christmas market which was restored in Stortorget by Gustav Vasa in 1523. It then became a major reorganization and Gustav Vasa stipulated that only Swedish goods were provided.

The market on Stortorget has varied in size and intensity over the centuries. After the current Stock Exchange house were built in 1776, the Christmas market moved to Stockholm Castle inner courtyard. The market grown and in the early 1800's it also filled Slottsbacken and Skeppsbron. It was a typical craft market, and most of the professions have now more or less disappeared.

The Christmas market came back to Stortorget in 1837, the square importance as a trading place had fallen, and from 1849 was exclusively for the Christmas market
