Join Geocaching Hampton Roads for our 11th Annual Picnic!


Last year, the 10th Annual Picnic became the first MEGA event in the state of Virginia. Come out and join the fun!

When: Saturday, August 31st (Labor Day Weekend)
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Where: Newport News Park
Who: Open to all geocachers, families, and anyone interested in geocaching.
What: A social get-together to meet fellow cachers, exchange stories, learn about different aspects of caching, swap TB's, oh yea, and some caching thrown in there too!

Newport News Park is an 8,000 acre park with two fresh water reservoirs is one of the largest municipal parks east of the Mississippi. It features bicycle and boat rental, 188-site campground, golf course, horse show arena, interpretive programs, wildlife rehabilitation center, picnic shelters, playground, restrooms, stages, 30 miles of hiking trails, 5-mile mountain bike trail, and 5.3 mile bikeway, picnic shelters, and much much more!!! Personal boats (no gas motors) may be launched for a $4.00 fee.

10:30 - 11:00 - Meet the Author/Book Signing - “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Geocaching” with MonkeyBrad
11:00 - 11:30 - Nature’s Hazards (Are you ticked off yet?) - with RainbowWeaver and AgamemnonVA
11:30 - 1:30 LUNCH (Meal Ticket Required)
12:30 - 1:30 “Meet a Lackey/Ask a Reviewer” with Amy from Groundspeak and reviewers MonkeyBrad and Dogwood_Reviewer
1:00 - Afternoon Games Begin (See below for detailed schedule)
Start of Door prize drawings - Check the board near Registration Booth for winning numbers

1:30 “GeoSurvivor” Game starts
3:30 - GROUP PICTURE

ACTIVITIES

All winners will be announced and Prizes Awarded at 4:00 at the closing ceremonies.

 

Who’s Your Favorite – Creative Cache Containers Entered to Earn Favorite Points

 

10:00-11:00 Accept entries

11:00-2:00 Voting Time

 

“Favorite Points” for $0.25 a ticket/5 for a $1.00 (at the booth).  1 ticket = 1 point.

 

Two categories:  Kids 10 and under; Everyone else

Make/design (at home) a crafty, devious, unusual, indescribable cache container. 

Bring it to the Who’s You Favorite table where you will be given a number for your entry. 

 

Face Painting

10:30 -12:00 and 1:00 - 3:00 PM

 

Bubble Station

Deco Me – 10 and under

Decorate/camo cache containers to make and take

 

Geo-Survivor – A 3 Stage Multi for 2 Person Teams

Ammo Can Toss

 

10:30-12:00 and 1:00-2:30

 

4 sizes of ammo cans

 

Micro Can – Kid’s 4 and under

Small Can – Kids 5 -10, women

Regular Can – Guys 11 up

Manly-Man Can – open to all – This is the Ammo Can to top all Ammo Cans

 

Pole Cache – Toss Cache to the Pole – All Ages

 

10:30-11:30  - Open tossing – 10 closest advance to the playoffs

11:30 -12:00 – Play Off

 

Toss a weighted cache (pill bottle size) towards the pole.

First, second, third place prizes

 

GeoBingo

1:30 Deadline to turn in your completed bingo sheet at the “Who’s your favorite” table


 

Egg Raffle

Back by popular demand! Buy an egg and see if it holds coordinates to a container hidden nearby. The container is yours to keep! Not all eggs will contain coordinates, but take a chance and have some fun. Containers will include bison tubes, lock and lock, ammo cans and more! Available until all eggs are sold!

Attention Camping Cachers!
It is Labor Day Weekend! We have taken the liberty of reserving about 45 campsites at Newport News Park. We have scoped out and secured the best sites available on the best loop (loop ”B”). The are reserved under geocaching. Campsites are first come first serve. All sites are equipped with water and electric and will accommodate either a camper, a pop-up, or two tents. All sites have a maximum of 5 people or 1 family per site. Sites are $31/night. You must call the campground directly and reserve the available site of your choice and change the reservation to YOUR name.
