Geocache Description:

The original Vampire Rabbit (GCXTMK) was one of the first caches that I found and it's a great little feature that I'd like more people, especially visitors to Newcastle, to know about so I've put a new cache near the same location as the old archived one. Here's some text from the original description:

"Sitting above the ornate doorway to an office building, the Vampire Rabbit is one of the most unusual of Newcastle's architectural oddities. I have been unable to find any explanation as to why it is here; if anyone has any theories, please feel free to let me know."

This hill above the quayside is the oldest part of Newcastle, so while you're here you might want to have a look at some other things:
Newly installed in 2023 there are some noticeboards above the cache describing the rabbit, the Lort Burn and Thomas Bewick's workshop which were all very close to this spot.
The cache location is dominated by the cathedral - there's some great stuff to see inside, so be sure to check that out.
Head south towards the Castle Keep and you'll pass the Black Gate which was the medieval entrance to the castle area and, under the railway arches, the foundations of an Anglo-Saxon chapel and the outlines of the buildings of the roman fort marked in cobblestones in the ground.
There's an entrance fee for the Black Gate and the Keep but the views from the top are great and the new museum is well worth a visit.
