Geocache Description:

A cache near Heraklion.

The cave of Eileithya is located 7 km east of Heraklion. It is above the beach of Karteros. You can follow the signs from the waypoint at the old national road and you will be in place. The entrance of the cave is signed by a big old fig tree. The iron door in front of the cave is some days open some others not. The cache is located near the entrance and it is a small box, a little bigger than a film canister.

Eileithya was daughter of Hera and was considered the goddess of childbirth and midwifery. By the legend Hera gave birth to her in this cave. We find her name since the Minoan era. A few meters after the entrance of the cave there is a huge rock, there the pregnant women were coming and they touched their body to this rock to have a good birth.
