Geocache Description:

Castle Rock is a small peak located in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. It is a long drive to get out there, but the hike to the top is not too strenuous. Expect about 400-500 feet of elevation gain.

This cache has 2 stages. Since new physical caches are not allowed on DNWR land, the final is on the way back out to the highway, outside of the DNWR boundaries.

To find the final coordinates, you must first hike up to the posted coordinates at the summit of Castle Rock and find the summit register in a small cairn. The first log in the register is from 1999! Although the ink has faded, you can still make out the date of the first entry in the summit log if you look closely. This is key, as that date will lead you to the final location.

The final is located at N 36° 25.8AA W 115° 24.BB0

AA = the 2 digit month from the first log in the book (01-12)

BB = the 2 digit day from the first log in the book (01-31)

Enjoy the views of Vegas from up here! Also, if you're lucky enough to be at the summit at sunset, make sure to bring a camera.

I recommend marking the coordinates of your vehicle when you park. You will most likely not be able to see it until you are really close to it on the way back. Also, it is against the law to drive off of the established roads in the Wildlife Refuge & all vehicles must be street legal. Please adhere to these rules. Its not that long of a hike.

Lastly, when you drive in, please make sure to stop at the DNWR Visitor Center on the way in. You don't have to go inside, but PLEASE sign in at the kiosk. This helps to get more money for the Refuge. It'll only take 20 seconds.

Congrats to VegasScotty for FTF!!
