Fudgeman: Checked on this one today and it had gone. This is the second time it's gone missing and I'm no longer working in the area so it's not easy to maintain it. Therefore I've decided to archive it. Thank you to all who visited it.

Geocache Description:

Holy Trinity Twickenham Green

As the Twickenham area grew it was felt that the parish of St Mary’s needed supporting with new churches and parishes. Committees were formed to organise the building of the new churches and funds had to be raised. George Owen Cambridge (son of poet Richard Owen Cambridge) who was Archdeacon of Middlesex and Prebendary of Ely became the treasurer for the committee involved in fund raising for the new church (Holy Trinity) on Twickenham Green. On the 12 August 1840 he laid the foundation stone for the new church but didn’t live to see its completion. He is buried in the family vault at St Mary’s Church, Twickenham.

Later, his widow had the trowel used for the foundation ceremony fashioned into a small silver chalice and paten, donating this to the church. An inscription on the case of the chalice reads as follows:-

THIS SACRAMENTAL PLATE for the private administration OF THE HOLY COMMUNION is presented by Mrs Cambridge TO TRINITY CHURCH on Twickenham Common being in part formed out of the Silver Trowel WHICH WAS PRESENTED TO THE LATE VENERABLE ARCHDEACON CAMBRIDGE on the occasion of his laying THE FIRST STONE OF THAT CHURCH on the 31st of August 1840.

The church still has a close link with Archdeacon Cambridge’s CE primary school in Twickenham.

Holy Trinity Twickenham was extended in 1861 but during WW2 a German bomb landed on the green causing damage to one side of the church.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
