Park either at Oakzanita or East Mesa parking area of State Highway 79 to access Lower Descanso Creek Trail. The trail meanders beside seasonal Lower Descanso Creek, rising gently from Highway 79 on the south to East Mesa Fire Road on the north. Good footing for the most part with gentle switchbacks suited to a leisurely day-hike.
This outing offers a good view of Oakzanita Peak to the east and introduces you to the extensive mountain chaparral and sparse stands of Live Oak trees that are typical of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. All in all it offers a grand day out for hikers and horseback riders.
Carry a couple of spare containers for goodness sakes
