Μια κρύπτη κοντά σ'ενα ενδιαφέρον, παραδοσιακό κτίσμα.
The word mitato (in the plural mitata) comes from the Latin metatum, meaning the collected crop. In the beginning, mitata were used as military lodges. In the Byzantine era, they were used as temporary lodges for state clerks or citizens moving from one place to another. Nowadays mitata can be found in all mountainous villages in Crete and the Cyclades and are used by shepherds.
On the mountains of Crete, a mitato is a hut built from locally-gathered stones to provide shelter to shepherds. It is also used for cheese making and storing. The small yard next to it is used for milking the sheep. Mount Psiloritis and the White Mountains are particularly rich in flat stones suitable for this dry-stone construction.
We placed the cache on an autumn day. The mountains around were full of sheep, we could hear them sound as a chorus!
To get to the cache you need to drive along the old road connecting Rethymnon and Heraklion until you reach a village called Kambos Doksarou. There, at N 35 20.811 E 024 50.205, you turn north and you follow the asphalt road. This cache can be combined with Moni Vosakou cache, http://coord.info/GC23FMM
The cache is a bright color small plastic cylinder placed in the area around the mitato but not in it. To search for it, you don't have to touch any part of the dry-stone construction. It contains a logbook, a pencil and some small goods to trade. Please, mind that no one is watching you from the tavern nearby. Don’t forget to hide it well again!
Η λέξη μιτάτο προέρχεται από το λατινικό metatum, το οποίο σημαίνει στρατιωτικό κατάλυμα. Στα βυζαντινά χρόνια η λέξη μιτάτο είχε την έννοια του προσωρινού καταλύματος στους ταξιδεύοντες κρατικούς υπαλλήλους ή πολίτες. Σήμερα η λέξη μιτάτο σημαίνει το κατάλυμα του βοσκού.
Στα βουνά της Κρήτης το μιτάτο χτίζεται με πέτρες του τόπου ως ξερολιθιά και χρησιμοποιείται ως καταφύγιο των βοσκών και ως τυροκομεία. Η μικρή στάνη δίπλα του χρησιμεύει στο άρμεγμα των αιγοπροβάτων. Μιτάτα μπορούμε να συναντήσουμε σχεδόν σε όλα τα ορεινά χωριά της Κρήτης και των Κυκλάδων, όπου η πέτρινες πλάκες βρίσκονται σε αφθονία.
Τοποθετήσαμε την κρύπτη μια όμορφη φθινοπωρινή μέρα. Τα βουνά τριγύρω ήταν γεμάτα προβατάκια, που με τις φωνές τους και τα κουδούνια τους ακούγονταν σαν χορωδία!
Για να πάτε στην κρύπτη, πρέπει να οδηγήσετε στην παλιά εθνική οδό Ρεθύμνου – Ηρακλείου μέχρι το χωριό Κάμπος Δοξαρού. Εκεί, στο σημείο N 35 20.811 E 024 50.205, στρίβετε βόρεια και ακολουθείτε την άσφαλτο. Η κρύπτη αυτή μπορεί να συνδυαστεί και με την κρύπτη στη Μονή Βώσακου, http://coord.info/GC23FMM
Η κρύπτη είναι ένας μικρός, πλαστικός κύλινδρος με έντονο χρώμα, κρυμμένος κοντά στο μιτάτο. αλλά όχι σε αυτό. Δεν είναι απαραίτητο να μετακινήσετε πέτρες του τοίχου καθώς ψάχνετε. Περιέχει σημειωματάριο, μολύβι και ψιλοπράγματα για ανταλλαγή. Παρακαλούμε προσέξτε μήπως σας παρακολουθούν από την ταβέρνα πιο πάνω. Και μην αμελήσετε να την ξανακρύψετε καλά!
