The trailhead is 5 miles from US 98 near the end of Bluff Hammock Rd. Most of the road is paved, but the last 3/4 mile is gravel and the parking area is grass. There were no facilities here when the cache was placed.
Bluff Hammock is a trailhead for the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST or FT). The trail in this area parallels the west bank of the Kissimmee River and passes through the Kissimmee River Public Use Area which is jointly managed by SFWMD and FWC.
Bluff Hammock is a good place to start or finish a dayhike; the other end of your 9-mile hike would be the Hickory Hammock trailhead on US 98 (see GC17RKF). There are several caches along the FT between Hickory Hammock and Bluff Hammock.
You can also head north. There is a primitive campsite along the FT 1.5 miles in that direction at Mosquito Hammock (a very inviting name). Further north you will pass Fort Kissimmee Cemetery (a late 1800s pioneer settlement), Avon Park Bombing Range before reaching KICCO (ghost town and WMA) and River Ranch off SR 60. Plan for an overnight hike as it is about 25 miles from Bluff Hammock to KICCO.
Be aware that some parts of the FT along the Kissimmee River have seasonal hunting or pass through active cattle fields.
This cache is placed partly in tribute to Team CHETT, one of the earliest Okeechobee geocachers who shared a great deal of local history and personal memories in this many geocaches (sadly, nearly all of them now gone). He had two now archived caches located in the Bluff Hammock area: GCQRK6 and GCTMAB.
Cache placed with permission from Kim Lewis at SFWMD. If you wish to place a cache on SFWMD-managed land please fill out their online form which includes their additional guidelines for cache placements.
Congrats to BigLakeCachers for FTF more than 2 months after the cache was published!
