A short circular walk taking in The Church of the Black Madonna and the secret school in the cave.
We placed this cache as a circular walk of around 1 km starting from the parking area. Along the route there are some lovely views of Vamos and the surrounding countryside. At the end of your walk there is a marble table and bench in the shade of a huge oak tree which would be ideal for a picinic. The trail starts at the steps to the left of the new stone church and is marked along the way by blue/red dots on the rocks. It is quite easy to follow. The path goes up hill and it is best to wear good shoes. It is possible that this will be a little over grown in spring. Follow the path through the woods and over a small wall until you come to the church. Inside you will see the Black Madonna. Continue out of the church via the blue gate where you will find a cave. During the Turkish occupation of Crete this cave was used as a secret school. During WWII it was used as a church as well as a hiding place for the resistance and the locals of the village.
The cache is a small plastic box and is hidden outside of the church grounds. Continue to follow the blue/red dots until you come to a wide track. Go left through the stock gates until you are back at the parking area.
