Christ Church - Southwark - Blackfriars Road
Some of the windows on this unique church


This Anglican Parish church is situated in Blackfriars Road. The parish of Christ Church Southwark was formed in 1670, the boundary of which is the same as the riverside Paris Garden which was mentioned by Shakespeare in his play Henry VIII as being of a disreputable place. The original church which was here sank into the marshy boggy ground and eventually had to be rebuilt. This post-war (1959) build is actually much lovelier inside than out. It is the only church which has a stained glass window which features a Sainsbury's shopping trolley plus one for Lloyds Bank, it also has many other unusual stained glass windows.
The present building replaces the second church which was severely damaged by enemy action on 17 April 1941. The stone cross in the grass behind the church marks where the tower's cross fell and was listed in the National Register of War Memorials in 2003.

If you get time do try and visit the church, it is a lovely church inside!
