Geocache Description:

This is a multi cache, where you have to work out the final location by finding information from the given way points. You'll walk less than 1 mile depending on where you park. Free parking is available in front of the church, but may be busy during services. Also, cows walk & defecate freely here so wear suitable footwear. Dogs must be kept on a lead & please do not allow them to foul the churchyard. Please leave bikes at the parking co-ords & follow the route on foot only.

About the Church

The original church dates back to Saxon times; also being listed in The Domesday Book of 1088. In the thirteenth century the population of Emsworth grew very rapidly and during this time the church was rebuilt and added to many times. The next significant period of rebuilding and improvements was during the 16th century. The third and last period of building and renovation began at the beginning of the 19th century after an extended period of neglect when extensive restoration took place inside. The present organ was installed in 1833. For lots of interesting information about the church, including a leaflet you can print and take with you to spot some of the especially significant architectural features, check out this web site.

Locating the cache

The various way-points will take you on a tour of the church grounds highlighting how grave and headstone styles have changed over the years.

  1. The cache co-ordinates will take you to the oldest part of the churchyard. Find the stone tomb of John Coleman and 4 of his un-named children, who died in infancy. John died A2 April 174B He was in his 3Cth year.
  2. Waypoint 2 Take the footpath through the back of the churchyard, to the newest area where the Natural Burial Ground is sited. Notice how none of the natural burial graves here are marked with a headstone, but that the area is studded with sapling trees instead. At the waypoint count the letters engraved on the backrest of the bench. DE = no. of letters in the first word. F = no. of letters in the second word.
  3. Waypoint 3 Walk through the gates (South) in to the 20th Century area to find the grave of Mollie (wife and mother) and Stanley (husband and father). Take a quick look around and notice how many of the stones have gold lettering in this area. What adjective is used to describe Mollie, which is absent on the description of Stanley? G = no. of letters in this word.
  4. Waypoint 4 Head West to Martha’s elaborate headstone erected in the earlier part of the same century. What adjective is used to describe the memory of her? H = no. of letters in this word.
