Geocache Description:

Where you are standing was once the same lake bed as where the tender brought you to this island.  When my Dad bought the island in 1972, the tender area and where you are standing was all one shallow brackish lake.  It was filled by rainwater and the occasional strom bringing ocean water over the berm.   After trying to develop the island as "An Island for Science" trhoughout the 70's we ended up developing it as a cruise ship port-of-call.

The potential cruise companies were very skeptical at first. I remember statements like, "Crusing is quite formal. Our passengers are not going to want to get their feet sandy!". Of course, my Dad was right and the "Island" stop became the most popular stop on the cruise -- once he convinced a company to try it.  In the 80's he sold it to the company now known as RCCL.   They wanted to make a harbor for the tenders, so they blasted through the rocky side and dredged the lake -- or at least part of it.   The part you are in was left as is.  With the deeper portion in existence, it was drained and a variety of plants and trees took hold.  This Banyon tree is one we encouraged.   I am proud that its branches are now thick enough to conceal a cache.

You can read more about the island, and our life and development of it in the other cache descriptions.   Enjoy!

Cache is accessible by private boat, as well as cruise ship.
