Lagoa do Capitão
A Lagoa do Capitão localiza-se nas imediações da montanha do Pico, um imponente estrato vulcão que, com 2351 metros é o ponto mais alto de Portugal.
A Lagoa do Capitão encontra-se inserida na área de Paisagem Protegida da Zona Central do Parque Natural da Ilha do Pico, encontrando-se também abrangida pela Rede Natura 2000 e pelo geossitio do Planalto da Achada, do Geoparque Açores. A Lagoa do Capitão, à semelhança das restantes lagoas da ilha do Pico, é considerada de pequena dimensão e pouco profunda (área: 0,026 km2, profundidade máxima: 4,5 metros), no entanto, é a maior da ilha do Pico, situando-se a uma cota média de altitude que ronda os 826 metros.
É ainda uma massa de água com potencial para utilizações múltiplas, incluindo abastecimento para a agropecuária, e um elemento singular da paisagem da ilha, com elevado valor cénico, sendo um local aprazível para recreio e lazer.
Ao longo do ano é aqui possível observar diversas aves, algumas aquáticas migradoras, além das espécies terrestres que compõem o habitat local: Melro-Preto (Turdus merula azorensis),Canário-da Terra (Serinus canaria), Tentilhão-dos-Açõres (Fringilla coelebs moreletti), Marrequinha (Anas crecca), Galinhola (Scolopax rusticola) e Narceja-Comum (Gallinago gallinago). Em zonas de média altitude, destaca-se a presença do Pombo-Trorcaz-dos-Açores (Columba palumbus azorica) e do Milhafre (Buteo buteo rothschildi).
Nesta escarpa, existem diversos cobertos vegetais constituídos por espécies endémicas raras e com estatuto de proteção, Trovisco Macho (Euphorbia stygiana) e Cedro-do- Mato (Juniperus brevifolia). A oeste deste local, no Planalto da Lagoa do Capitão, a paisagem é dominada por um misto de pastagens e de vegetação natural, destacando-se as formações dominadas por Cedro-do-Mato (Juniperus brevifolia), designadas por florestas macaronésicas de Juniperus (habitat protegido pela Diretiva Habitats.).

Lagoa do Capitão
The Lagoa do Capitão is located in the surroundings of Pico Mountain, an imposing stratovolcano that with 2351 m is the highest point in Portugal.
Is inserted in the Protected Landscape area of the Zona Central of the Natural Park of Pico island, and is also covered by the Natura 2000 Network and the geosite Planalto da Achada of the Azores Geopark. The Lagoa do Capitão, along with the other lakes on the Pico island, is considered small and shallow (area: 0,026 km2, maximum depth: 4,5m), however, it is the largest on Pico island, standing at a mean elevation altitude of around 826 meters.
It´s yet a mass of water with potential for multiple uses, including supply for the agriculture, and an unique element of the landscape of the island, with high scenic value, being a pleasant place for recreation and leisure.
Throughout the year is possible to observe various birds, some migratory aquatic, and terrestrial species that compose the local habitat: Blackbird (Turdus merula azorensis), Canary (Serinus canaria), Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs moreletti), Common Teal (Anas crecca), Eurasian Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola) and Common Snipe (Gallinago gallinago). In the medium altitude zones, stands out the presence of Common Woodpigeon (Columba palumbus azorica) and Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo rothschildi).
In this scarp, there are several covered plants consisting of rare endemic species and with protection status, Euphorbia stygiana and Juniper (Juniperus brevifolia). To the west of this location, the Planalto of Lagoa do Capitão, the landscape is dominated by a mixture of pasture and natural vegetation, especially the formations dominated by Juniper (Juniperus brevifolia), Known as Juniperus macaronesian forests (habitat protected in the Habitats Directive).

 About the geocache
There is something special about this geocache. It also belongs to the "Azores Project", a geocaching treasure hunt in the 9 islands.
On each island there is a geocache of the project. Inside of each container you will find part of the coordinats needed to find the AZORES project bonus cache that is located in St Michaels island.
