Ellery Queen was a fictional detective, and also the pen name of the two authors who created him, and then later the pen name of several others. The two original creators were Daniel Nathan (AKA Frederic Dannay) and Manford Lepofsky (AKA Manfred Bennington Lee). (It’s a little confusing.)
Novels were followed by radio, TV and film adaptations, comic books, board games and jigsaw puzzles. Actor Jim Hutton (father of actor Timothy) portrayed Ellery Queen in a mid-seventies TV show.
Ellery Queen’s “The Case of the Missing Modern Art”
“Thanks for coming over so quickly, Mr. Queen.” Bennington Ralston, the curator of the Muggle Art Gallery, was clearly beside himself with worry. “We’ve never had anything stolen before. The criminals left behind a weird clue and a ransom note,”
“What was taken, Mr. Ralston?” asked Ellery Queen of the elderly art lover.
“Our prized painting, I’m afraid,” he replied. “It’s called ‘First To Find,’ and it was painted by the modern master, George Cacher. The burglars want ten million dollars in ransom if we can't figure out the clue. Here’s a photograph of what was taken.”
Ellery Queen thought to himself that modern art was overrated (or at the very least overpriced), but kept the thought to himself. “Show me the crime scene, please.”
Mr. Ralston led Queen to where “First To Find” had been hanging. In its place was this graphic image:
Ellery Queen looked on with interest. “Don’t worry,” he said to Mr. Ralston. “I think I know where to start looking.”
