Geocache Description:

This Geocache is a handy smash and grab on the way to the Healy Pass.  Park by Lauragh church and take a walk into the woodland beside the Owenshagh River to locate the cache.

The land around Derreen came into the ownership of the Fitzmaurice Family in 1657 through Sir William Petty, physician to Oliver Cromwell.  Petty’s daughter married Lord Kerry whose family later became Lansdowne. Until 1856 the house was let to the McFinnan Duffs, chiefs of the O’Sullivan clan.
When the fifth Marquess of Lansdowne succeed in 1866, he was drawn to the remoteness of the place and decided to make Derreen his summer home. Today the house still belongs to his descendants, The Bigham family. The Bigham family are Geocaching enthusiasts and would be delighted for people to find their cache.
Derreen Garden began in 1870, when the fifth Marquess of Lansdowne embarked on an ambitious plan to transform the bare rock and scrub oak around the Derreen House into the luxuriant woodland garden of today.  He planted 400 acres to shelter a collection of shrubs and specimen trees, many of them brought back from his sojourns as Viceroy of India and Governor General of Canada. Some of the huge Arboreum Rhododendrons that are in the garden were planted at this time.
Derreen Garden covers more than 60 acres and includes nearly 12km of paths, which wind through mature and varies woodland to reveal wonderful views over Kilmakilloge harbour, the Caha Mountains and the distant McGillicuddy Reeks.
Also in the area is O’Sullivan’s pub on Killmakillouge Pier which must be one of the most scenic settings for a pub in the whole of Ireland.  In nearby Glanmore Lake, Josie’s Restauraunt is a little gem of a place to have something to eat and look over the lake below and, the Healy Pass high above.

The cache consists of a plastic box containing 7  sachets of flower seeds (for the budding gardener) and 1 Ireland key ring.
