Ellingham church was built in the 13th century. It is thought that there was an earlier, probably Saxon, church on the site. It is described in early charters as the church of St Mary or as the church of All Saints with the chapel of St Mary. It was added to in the 15th century, and the red-brick west wall was rebuilt in 1746. The church was restored in1869-90 by Thomas Graham Jackson. It has a large blue sundial located over the porch of the church.
Ellingham Church has long been associated with the tragic story of Alice Lisle and many come to see her tomb which is sited to the east of the south porch. Alice was the daughter of Sir White Beconsawe and was born about 1618. She married Colonel John Lisle, a prominent Parliamentarian, Judiciary and an Assessor to Bradshw at the Trial of Charles I.
Alice was arrested for sheltering two men at Moyles Court after Monmouth’s defeat at Sedgemoor. She was sentenced to death by Judge Jeffreys and she was publically executed in the Market Place at Winchester on 2 September 1685. Her tomb was not engraved until after the death of her daughter, Mrs Ann Harfell in 1708. The stone is not dressed around the edges which looks as if it was intended to be placed in the floor of the church. The stone rested on brick walls at one time but in about 1850 the present stone walls were substituted.
The inscription on Alice Lisle’s tomb is:
“Here Lies Dame Alicia Lisle and her Daughter Ann Harfell, who dyed the 17 of Feb. 1709/8.
Alicia Lisle Dyed the second of Sept. 1685.”
