Geocache Description:

October 14 2012 is International EarthCache Day!

From the guidelines: "People do not need to wait for permission to log your EarthCache. Requiring someone to wait is not supported by the EarthCache guidelines. People should send their logging task answers to you, then log your EarthCache. When you review their logging task answers, if there is a problem, you should contact them to resolve it. If there is no problem, then their log simply stands."

What is it? - A chilled margin is a textural feature of an intrusive or volcanic rock texture characterised by a glassy or fine grained zone along the margin where the magma or lava has contacted air, water, or particularly much cooler rock. This is caused by rapid crystallization of the melt near the contact with the surrounding low temperature environment.

Your lesson in this EarthCache – Observe a well developed and easy to identify chilled margin so that you will never forget what it is.

Geological setting of this EarthCache - The country rock types are reef limestones of Lower Cretaceous (Hauterivian – Barremian; 136.4 to 125 M.a.) age striking NE and dipping gently to the SE cut occasionally by igneous dykes.

Difficulty of the EC lesson – Easy!

Logging requirements - In order to log this EC you need to get to GZ and answer a few simple questions. There is no need to step down but you can if you want to get a closer look. If you think you have the right answers, log the cache but ALSO send me the answers via my profile with the following information1 - Identification of the cache; 2- Answers and 3- please click: I want to send my e-mail along with this. c
Logs without answers = log deletion!

Question 1 – What is the orientation of the dyke?
Question 2 – What is the thickness of the chilled margin on the western edge (Cascais side) of the dyke?
Question 3 - What is the thickness of the chilled margin on the eastern edge (Lisbon side) of the dyke?
Question 4 – What is the predominant colour of the chilled margin rock? (Choose from the following list: purple, green, brown, red and yellow).
Question 5 – Does the chilled margin remain constant adjacent the dyke or does it vary?

(NO SPOILER PHOTOS IN LOGS!)

I want to send my e-mail along with this message.”

Question 1 – Qual a orientação do dique?

aThe most exciting way to learn about the Earth and its processes is to get into the outdoors and experience it first-hand. Visiting an Earthcache is a great outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. An Earthcache is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of our Earth. Earthcaches include a set of educational notes and the details about where to find the location (latitude and longitude). Visitors to Earthcaches can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the resources and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth.
