Pumice, a rock so light it floats, is the hardened residue of volcanic froth. This cache is loacated on the site of a pumice mill built over 90 years ago by an English syndicate that secured the mining rights in 1919 - practically the only known high grade supply in the world. Pumice is used for making scouring powder and the world famous Lava soap. Coarser grades are used as an ingredient in the manufacturing of concrete block to create lighter blocks.
A short hike along the shore of the Salton Sea, next to one of the Sea's ancient volcanoes, is required to reach this cache. Notice the beach is made up of black volcanic obsidian, rhyolite, and pumice mixed with barnacle skeletons left by the receding sea.
