Geocache Description:

This cache is a 10 stage multi-cache based on the work of a French street artist known only as "Invader". He puts mosaics inspired by the sprites from vintage video games in cities all over the world. He appears to have made at least three trips to Newcastle and there may be some copy-catting by locals going on too. This cache will take you around a selection of works that I think are his in the centres of Newcastle and Gateshead.

This isn't an exhaustive list of Invader's mosaics in the area - but it may be an exhausting cache! If you do this on foot then expect to spend a good chunk of time on it; it's well worth considering doing it by bike. Either way there are some steep climbs on either side of the river, and the final location is most easily accessed by stairs. Access times for two of the locations are restricted, so read all of this description before heading out.

No part of the cache is very difficult but the terrain rating reflects the distance and time that it will take. You could do all of this cache by wheelchair (though you'd need to wiggle about some convoluted routes!) but people with vision difficulties (including colour blindness) may need some help.

At each stage you'll need to find the colour of a particular part of the mosaic and use the table below to turn that colour into a number.

Colour Number
Black 8
Blue 2
Brown 0
Green 6
Orange 7
Red 1
  White 5
Yellow 4

The coordinates for the final location are: North AB° AC.DEE West FFG° HJ.HED

Start

The start coordinates given for this cache will take you to a pillar supporting a building which extends over half of Pilgrim Street. There's a big and very visible example of Invader's work on it which gives you an idea of what you're looking for for the rest of this cache.
Now that you know what you're looking for head off to stage 1.

Stage 1

The colour of the alien's body at N54° 58.443 W001° 36.857 gives you "B".

Stage 2

The colour of the thin background strip at N54 58.314 W001 37.246 gives you "D".

Stage 3

Count the number of colours on the mosaic at at N54° 58.231 W001° 37.184 gives you "H".

Stage 4

The colour of the alien's body at N 54° 58.263 W 001° 36.838 gives you "A".

Stage 5

The colour of alien's body at N54° 58.139 W001° 36.734 gives you "E".

Stage 6

The colour of the firebreather's skin at N54° 58.175 W001° 36.586 gives you "J".

Stage 7

The colour of the character's body hair at N54° 58.127 W001° 36.388 gives you "F".

Stage 8

For this one you'll need to go down the stairs at N54° 57.682 W001° 36.233. Access may be restricted in the dead of night. As you go underground you'll lose your GPS signal, but go to the bottom of the stairs and turn right. Keep walking forward but keep an eye over your left shoulder. There's no need to buy a ticket or enter the area that requires a ticket; there is a mosaic further underground in the ticketed area but that's not the one that you're looking for (if you can see any green tesserae in the design then you're in the wrong place).

The colour of the alien's body gives you "C".

Stage 9

Go to N54° 58.147 W001° 35.918 and then go into the building. It's open daily from 10am to 6pm except Tuesday when it opens at 10.30am. You'll lose your GPS signal inside but you need to go to the stairwell in the south west corner of the main building, and then head up to Level 2. You could get the lift and then head for the stairwell - you can see the mosaic from the landing.

The colour of the pupils of the alien's eyes gives you "G" (They're not white!).

You should now have all of the information that you need - enter those numbers in place of the letters in the coordinates above and you'll be taken to a place that helped (and failed at least once) to stop invasions in the past.

You can check your answers for this puzzle on GeoChecker.com.

Congratulations to Henry-Jones and Just-Us-Two for the first to find!
