The French Pete Trail Head is an old-growth trail in the forest valley of the Willamette National Forest. The nearly 10 mile trail gains about 950 feet in elevation. It’s surrounded by enormous Dougals firs and 1,000-year-old cedars. French Pete Creek parallels the trail for about three miles. Controversy surrounded French Pete Trail early on. In 1968, logging plans were announced for the area and the news didn’t sit well with many Oregonians. After many debates, appeals and a personal hiking trip by U.S. Senator Wayne Morris and his Republican foe Mark Hatfield, the French Pete area won protection with the passage of the 1978 Endangered Wilderness Bill. French Pete became the first mountain valley forest to be added to the Three Sisters Wilderness.
