The Old McKenzie Fish Hatchery once raised salmon and trout for release into the McKenzie River. The original hatchery opened in 1907. The state of Oregon paid just $517 for the land! Over the years, the hatchery grew to become a huge operation, collecting more than one million fish eggs for breeding in 1951 alone. The operations slowly out grew the facility. In 1952, construction began for a new hatchery a half-mile downstream at Leaburg Dam. The old fish hatchery closed in 1953 and has since become a historic landmark and 46-acre public park operated by Lane County. The main buildings have been renovated and are now used as an education center. The buildings also house the McKenzie River Chamber of Commerce Information Center, a popular stop for drivers along Highway 126.
