La Mandragola
La Mandragola è una commedia scritta da Niccolò Machiavelli, probabilmente nel 1514. La vicenda si svolge a Firenze nel 1504: Callimaco è innamorato di Lucrezia, ma lei è sposata a Nicia, un uomo sciocco. Poiché Lucrezia non ha ancora avuto figli, un cruccio per Nicia, Callimaco usa l'astuzia di Ligurio, un losco sensale di matrimoni, che introduce Callimaco come un dottore che assicura a Nicia che Lucrezia resterà incinta se prenderà una pozione di radice di Mandragola, però l'uomo che giacerà con lei morirà il giorno dopo. Nicia non vuole morire e concorda con Callimaco di trovare un altro uomo per la quella notte, Lucrezia è riluttante, ma viene convinta da Frate Timoteo che è in combutta con Callimaco. Nicia nella notte cattura un passante nella strada ma non sa che è che lo stesso Callimaco travestito. La cosa procede secondo i piani: Callimaco passa la notte con l'adorabile Lucrezia e Nicia avrà il suo erede.
Machiavelli fu ispirato da un fatto vero che accadde a Firenze, la casa di Nicia è reputata essere situata in Via dell'Amorino, la strada deriva il suo nome dalla vicina Via sant'Antonino che in passato era chiamata Via dell'Amore per i numerosi bordelli che vi si trovavano (ora non più).
The Mandrake
The Mandrake is a Comedy written by Niccolò Machiavelli, maybe in 1514. The scene is situated in Florence in the year 1504: Callimaco falls in love with Lucrezia, but she is married to Nicia, a silly man. Since Lucrezia hasn't yet a baby, a sorrow for Nicia, Callimaco uses the skill of Ligurio, a rascal narriage broker who introduces Callimaco as a doctor who ensures Nicia that Lucrezia will result in pregnancy if she will take a potion of the root of Mandrake but the man who will sleep with her will die the next day. Nicia won't to die and agrees with Callimaco to provide another man for that night, Lucrezia is reluctant, but is convinced by the friar Timoteo who is in league with Callimaco. Nicia in the night captures a man in the street, but he doesn't know that he is Callimaco in disguise. The affair goes according to plan: Callimaco gets his night with the lovely Lucrezia and Nicia will have his heir.
Machiavelli was inspired by a true fact happened in Florence, the Nicia's house is reputed to be placed in Via dell'Amorino, the street derives its name (Little Love) from the near Via Sant'Antonino that in the past was named Via dell'Amore (Love Street) because there were several brothels (now no more).
