Geocache Description:

Understanding Nomenclature, Chemistry, And Nanos Near Youngstown

This series blends my career as a chemist and my love of geocaching. You are looking for a nano on the sign that represents the chemical symbol for the element in the cache title. FTF: Congratulations to teamgizzy

Brush the dust off your periodic tables. (I understand some of you may have destroyed or mutilated them because of the love/hate nature of chemistry.) The series is not meant to be difficult but fun and educational.

Beware of Muggles. Please tighten and return the Nano to the exact location and save space by only initialling the log.

Additional information:

Discovered by Fausto and Juan Jose de Elhuyar at 1783 in Spain. Origin of name: from the Swedish words meaning "heavy stone" (the origin of the symbol is "wolfram ", named after the mineral wolframite).

Uses:

  • useful for glass-to-metal seals since the thermal expansion is about the same as borosilicate glass
  • its alloys are used extensively for filaments for electric lamps, electron and television tubes, and for metal evaporation
  • electrical contact points for car distributors
  • X-ray targets
  • windings and heating elements for electrical furnaces
  • missile and high-temperature applications
  • high-speed tool steels
  • the carbide is important to the metal-working, mining, and petroleum industries
  • calcium and magnesium tungstates are widely used in fluorescent lighting
  • salts are used in the chemical and tanning industries
  • its disulphide is a dry, high-temperature lubricant, stable to 500°C
  • used in paints
  • TV tubes (electron tubes)
  • X-ray targets
