A New Era Mystery Cache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

Red Barrister: There's only one DNF, but I will disable this so nobody wastes time on a search. I'll check on it, and if missing, I think it is time to archive this one and open the park area for a new hide.

Geocache Description:

It is not the end of the world, it is the beginning of a new era.

12/21/2022 Update. The Temple Series was discontinued after ten years. This was published as a bonus challenge for those who solved and found all twenty in the series. From this date, the final coordinates are visible to be found as a traditional cache. The original puzzle is preserved below:

The Maya did not predict the end of the world on this date. Their third "long count" calendar used a numbering system that appears to end. December 21, 2012, is the end of one cycle of 13 B’ak’tuns, a total of 5,200 years, which concludes an era. The eras are distinct spaces of time since the beginning of the world. According to Maya culture, several cosmic ages have passed since life appeared on Earth. The Mayan concept of time was cyclical and infinite.

This is an extra challenge cache to reward those who found all twenty Maya Temple puzzle caches. Those were published one per day through the last 20-day "month" of the Maya Tzolkin calendar. The Maya numbers obtained from those caches are needed to solve the coordinates for this cache.

If you accompany a person who qualifies to earn this cache before you find the others, you are welcome to put ink on the cache log. But please delay your claim of this smiley until you find all the Maya Temple caches.

The coordinates for this cache are N 47 xx.xxx and W 122 yy.yyy. The Minutes for each are the sum of numbers found in the prior Maya Temple caches and the final numbers derived from this page. Each of the caches published during the last twenty days of the Maya calendar contain symbols that represent Maya vigesimal numerals. Ten were labeled N and were each a four-digit number to combine for the latitude. Ten are labeled W and were each a three-digit number to combine for the longitude.

Add the North and the West numbers derived below to the respective prior sums. The Latitude will be a five digit number and the Longitude will be a four digit number. Then divide both the N and W grand totals by 1000, to produce the Minutes with three decimal places for xx.xxx and yy.yyy.

This is the first Mayan number in the series to have a fourth tier of Mayan glyphs that represents 20 times the third tier. The third tier is the number of 400s, so the fourth tier is the number of 8,000s.

The container is a well camoed lock 'n lock in a typical NW location a few feet from the edge of grass near a paved trail. Ample parking is available within 0.3 mi from GZ. The current puzzle results in a different number than originally published. The cache had to be moved August 2013. The GeoChecker has been revised.

Please verify your solution on GeoCheck

If you have trouble getting the final coords, like forgot to write a number on one of the prior caches, or your computation from Mayan is not right, please just write to Red Barrister or Captain Kevin and we will provide the missing number or correct your mistake. Hey, if you found those twenty, we want you to get this challenge find too!

Congratulations to the epic group collaboration FTF: CP grower, Tobias & Petronella, Flycachers!, DrTusk, _Shaddow_ and Lfppdf8&MyBetterHalf; and to these who found the entire series in the first twenty days: samukai, omham108, Red Barrister, Silly Willy, Hike a Photo, Princess Trouble. dsvaughn, Curious Joe, EFHutton, daysjourney, Telex, Lamoracke, Kiersolvd, prying pandora, Muddy_Teapot and frodoB.

The Temple Builders are honored that WSGA voted the Maya Temple Series as Cache of the Month.
