Geocache Description:

Cumback is a small community south of Washington.

New London, a thriving town on the banks of the East Fork of the White River south of Cumback in Daviess County, fell victim to the cholera epidemic in the 1840s. The town was founded by Eli Chapman and platted out in 1836. Seventy-seven lots were in the town. Chapman built a saw mill and sold lots rapidly. There were two stores, a blacksmith shop and a saw mill. When the mysterious disease descended upon the town of New London, most of the population of nearly 500 people died. People were so terrified the dead were often buried at night in shallow graves resulting in the graves being unmarked.
