Saint Malachy's origins, and the traditions which are intrinsic to its identity, can be traced back to the nineteenth century when a Catholic grade school for boys was built on the site of Saint Malachy's Church, dedicated to Saint Malachy, who was a missionary Bishop. The church had burnt down, and was at the future home of Saint Malachy's. Since that time, the school has grown and changed, always adapting to the times, even as it has sustained a tradition of academic excellence in a family atmosphere. Originally an all-boys school (taking the place of Saint Vincent's Boys' School), in September 1976, St. Malachy's opened its doors to girls for the first time. Today, housing a student population of approximately thirteen hundred students, Saint Malachy's has a recently expanded and renovated building. As it continues to grow, the principal, administration, staff, students, and supporters of the school are united in their determination to preserve their "small school" atmosphere to enhance the well-established reputation for academic, athletic and social achievement. They are dedicated to the principles of holistic education for all, a growing Advanced Placement program designed for students seeking academic challenges beyond the norm, and in varied and long-standing offerings in all areas., St, Malachy's is maintaining its position in the forefront of education in Saint John. As always, "Esse Quam Videri" ("To be rather than to seem") remains the watchword.
