Caniçal

Caniçal é uma vila e freguesia do concelho do Machico, com 11,46 km² de área. A Freguesia do Caniçal foi criada em 1561 e a origem do seu nome provém dos caniços, uma espécie de canas que abundavam na região, e foi o primeiro lugar habitado na região da Ponta de São Lourenço.

Naquelas terras, doadas a Vasco Moniz, contemporâneo dos filhos de Tristão Vaz, estabeleceu-se uma fazenda povoada que esteve na origem da actual freguesia, a mais antiga das pequenas Freguesias da Madeira. A data do testamento que Vasco Moniz lega ao seu filho primogénito o morgadio do Caniçal é de 5 de Setembro de 1489.

Devido ao isolamento deste local e às dificuldades de comunicação com Machico, foi criada uma paróquia por carta Régia de 25 de Agosto de 1527.

Foi na capela de São Sebastião, fundada por Garcia Moniz, no 1º quartel do século XVI que se instalou a nova sede da freguesia. Erguia-se mais a Oriente no sítio que ainda se chama Igreja Velha, a qual esteve a saque dos corsários no começo do Século XVI e foi ainda nesse mesmo século, em 1594, que se acresceu ou reedificou a mesma capela, que mais tarde ruiu, no terramoto de 1748.

Ainda do século XVI deu-se a construção da primitiva Capela da Nossa Senhora da Piedade, que segundo consta a tradição, foi resultado de uma promessa de marinheiros que estiveram em perigo ao passar a costa. Nesta cache pretendo iniciar um pequeno estudo para ver o numero de pessoas que leem as linstings, assim sendo pede-se aos geocachers que ao lerem a listing completa ou pelo menos esta frase propositadamente colocada a meio da listing,que, ao efectuar o log o primeiro caractere seja um arroba.

Desde tempos imemoriais se honra a Senhora dos Pescadores, em Setembro, com uma original procissão marítima. Quando a procissão se fazia em barco de vela, era um espectáculo original e interessante ver o embarque da confraria, de cruz alçada, o vigário e o andor acomodados na embarcação mais engalanada que os vinha tomar a uma ponta do litoral, antes de haver o cais.

Em 1942 é instalada a Empresa Baleeira do Arquipélago da Madeira, no sítio da Cancela que teve relativa importância económica e social para as gentes do Caniçal.

Apesar destas melhorias, o Caniçal continuou a ser, até meados do século XX, uma pequena e pobre freguesia desligada no resto da Ilha, situação que foi atenuada nos anos 60 com a construção do túnel.

A construção de um túnel de ligação a Machico, no início dos anos 60 contribuiu para abrir o Caniçal, por via terrestre, ao exterior, atenuando o seu isolamento secular que dotou a freguesia de características singulares no contexto madeirense. Esta levada tem origem nas Fontes Vermelhas, em Machico, e termina na paisagem seca do Caniçal, percorrendo uma extensão de 16 Km. Esta levada, existe desde 1949.

Para a cache apenas terá que percorrer cerca de 1km (mais um de regresso).Pede-se que leve consigo material de escrita. Estacione no local indicado, siga para o waypoint TRLH2, caso este se encontre encerrado, terá que iniciar o seu percurso no waypoint TRLH1.
Cuidado: Durante o percurso poderá encontrar abelhas. Pede-se aos geocachers para terem o cuidado de deixar tudo como estava: conteiner, logbook, proteçoes de logbook e conteiner contra as chuvas. Tente deixar o conteiner bem escondido visto ser um local de passagem de muggles. Protege-a como se fosse tua,obrigado.

Caniçal

Caniçal is a village and parish in the municipality of Machico, with 11.46 km ². The Caniçal Parish was created in 1561 and the origin of its name comes from the reeds, a kind of reed that abounded in the region, and was the first inhabited place in the region of São Lourenço.
