The formation

On the eastern side of jutland (Danmark) there is a 'geological monument' known as Hvidbjerg.
The name Hvidbjerg stand for White Mountain. When you follow the path over the ridge you immediately see why!
On top of this mountain you have a beautiful view over the Vejle fjord.

The Hvidbjeg is the largest sand dune of the east coast. The dune is nearly 30 meter high and a preserved sand dune. This dune was formed during the Pleistocene and Holocene period.
The geological substrate consists of shifting sand. The coastel dune has developed over the past 5000 years.
The dunefield is situated in a temperate climate zone with frequent high energy wind events. Dune development was characterized by repeated periods of transgressive dune formation punctuated by periods of dune stabilization an soil formation.
Proxy-climate data suggest that periods of dunefield activity were initiated during wet/cool summers. Most likely these climatic situations were associated with a more frequent passage of cyclones across Denmark in the summer seasons (increased storminess) causing aeolian sand movement and dune formation. The continued removal of vegetation in Jutland between 4000 BC and AD 1850 allowed the aeolian sand, when first activated, to move more and more easily across the coastal plains; the final phase of aeolian sand movement between AD 1550-1650 and 1900 had catastrophic
implications for many coastal inhabitants in the region.


The Process

A dune is a hill of sand built by aeolian processes. Dunes occur in different forms and sizes, formed by interaction with the wind. Most kinds of dunes are longer on the windward side where the sand is pushed up the dune and have a shorter "slip face" in the lee of the wind. The valley or trough between dunes is called a slack. A "dune field" is an area covered by extensive sand dunes.
Aeolian processes pertain to the activity of the winds and more specifically, to the winds' ability to shape the surface of the Earth. Winds can erode, transport, and deposit materials, and are effective agents in regions with sparse vegetation and a large supply of unconsolidated sediments. Although water is a much more powerful eroding force than wind, aeolian processes are important in arid environments,The term is derived from the name of the Greek god, Æolus, the keeper of the winds.


The Sand

Sand is a naturally occurring granular material composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles. The most common constituent of sand, in inland continental settings and non-tropical coastal settings, is silica (silicon dioxide, or SiO2), usually in the form of quartz, which, because of its chemical inertness and considerable hardness, is the most common mineral resistant to weathering.


The Flora and Fauna

Sand areas due to drought, heat, low soil nutrient poverty and developing habitat for a variety of endangered animal and plant species of European importance.

You can park your car at the given coordinate.
To be able to log this earthcache you must meet following criteria:
1)Walk toN55° 38.440' E9° 44.442' and write down the text on the stone.
2)Follow the path on the right and walk up the dune enjoy the view ;)
3) Walk to te beach, when you look towards the hvidbjeg klit you see to the left a horizontal ledge. Try to explane how this ledge is formed. (look close to the vegetation and think logically)
4)This next task is optional! but very much appreciated. ;-)
