Geocache Description:

Circular walk of approx 2 miles around Churchdown, suitable for geokids. Simple questions to answer along the way give you coordinates for final cache. (Adult help needed to work out final co-ordinates & reach final cache) Although mostly level, there is a flight of 5 steps to negotiate where the footpath from Cordingley Close meets Pirton Lane approaching Q5. Pushchairs could avoid this using the reference point given. The final location although not directly overlooked, requires stealth!

The whole route should take about an hour. Start from the Parish Council Offices and cross Parton Rd to continue alongside the Community Centre along Parton Rd! On your right is a small green field behind a row of trees. This site has been proposed for a new (badly needed) Doctor’s Surgery serving the whole area. Continue to the corner of the third turning on the left which is Parton Rd!

Q1 N 51° 52.924 W 002° 10.319 What is the TOP single digit number on the lamp post? = C

Continue to follow Parton Rd, passing some allotments on your left, until you reach the railway bridge. You cross the Glevum Way footpath along the way. Cross the main road carefully and follow the pathway behind the railings into Albemarle Rd and to The Brambles Vets Surgery.

Q2 N 51° 52.806 W 002° 10.065 How many UPSTAIRS windows on the side of the building facing the road? = E

Cross Albemarle Rd and turn right into Sandfield Rd. Continue along this road past some old cottages, where Sandfield Road turns into Blacksmith Lane. There is a row of shops on the left. Older residents of Churchdown will recall Ray’s Hardware store that was located in the first two units. Nowadays you can have refreshments there instead.

Q3 N 51° 52.584 W 002° 10.042 How many windows in the row ABOVE the shop fronts? = B

At the end of the road turn right into Church Lane, passing the Bat and Ball pub on your right. In recent years both an Indian and a Chinese restaurant have opened on this road. The Churchdown bowling green is opposite with Chapel Hay Park behind. Continue along the road until the mini roundabout beside St Andrews Church. Turn right then carefully cross the main road to enter the pathway along the left side of Churchdown Village Junior School.

Q4 N 51° 52.665 W 002° 10.274 How many baby chicks are on the weather vane? = A

Continue out of the alleyway turn right and follow the road. You pass a green and will soon reach a footpath in the far corner where a short flight of steps takes you down to Pirton Lane. If you have a pushchair you can avoid these steps via N 51° 52.619 W 002° 10.386 . However, you will need to cross Pirton Lane twice as there is no pavement between the steps and this point.

Q5 N 51° 52.707 W 002° 10.563 How many times on ONE side of the red telephone phone box does the letter B appear? (If obscured by vegetation, look for same name on the fence) = D

Cross the bridge known as ‘Sugarloaf’ bridge – due to (very) distant views westwards towards the mountain of this name! You cross the Glevum Way footpath at this point. Continue down the hill until you get to the mini roundabout at Winston Rd.

Q6 N 51° 52.802 W 002° 10.775 What is the last digit in white on the top row of the Water Marker Post = F

Turn into Winston Rd and right again at the next mini roundabout. Continue along Melville Rd until you get to the large Horse Chestnut tree on a small green.

Q7 N 51° 52.768 W 002° 10.576 What is the MIDDLE digit on the grey box of Grit? = G

You should now have all the numbers required to find the FINAL cache.
This can be found at :- N 51° 5A.BCD W 002° 10.EFG

The cache is a clip lock cylindrical tub in a camo bag. Originally containing some plastic dinosaurs & insects that need new homes.

Follow Melville Rd westwards until it joins the Glevum Way footpath, emerging in an estate with RAF inspired road names. You can follow the Glevum Way back to the Parish Council Offices to complete the circuit.
