The Church of St Mary and St Clement, Clavering was rebuilt in flint rubble about 600 years ago on an earlier site. It contains many original features including some of the best medieval stained glass in Essex, a 15th century fine carved screen and Elizabethan pulpit. The font dates from the 13th century and is made of Purbeck marble. On the south wall is a board describing the “herring” charity, which distributed barrels of herrings to the poor during Lent.

It stands next to an ancient moated site, thought to have been the site of Clavering Castle. The churchyard was also the location of a small medieval chapel, and signs of settlement have been found in the new churchyard.
“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list”
