Radium and Radios Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

frinklabs: Checked GZ today, and found (and removed) the LnL tab, with no other sign of the container.

The stump is now shielding a gopher hole so it is possible the rodent has taken the container into its den.

I won't replace the container at this spot (to avoid disturbing the gophers) but I was speaking with the facilities people and they're planning a rebuild of the spectator area and would entertain incorporating a built-in geocache hiding spot.

Fun!

Geocache Description:

Small Lock and Lock hidden at an interesting location across from an historic location

Across the road is the Passmore Avenue Temporary Storage Site of the Malvern Remedial Project

In 1980 and 1990 sites were found to have contamination from radium and the bulk of the removed soil was moved to this constantly-monitored site.

I was unable to get permission from the LLRWMO's property management company to place a cache outside their fence as they alleged it was not safe(?!?)

Periodic monitoring results are viewable through the locked gate, if you dare.

I attended the Malvern branch of the Toronto Public Library and checked out past readings from the site. It turns out that the levels there are no more or less than natural background radiation.

Here is a PDF file of past readings and a map of the monitoring facilities.

The location of the cache is next to the visitor's parking of a Toronto model airplane flying club's field.

Feel free to watch the pilots fly but heed the signs restricting non-club members from the flight line.

I believe it is arguably more difficult to fly a model airplane than a real one, given that you aren't actually in the aircraft to have proper visual cues for direction and attitude.

The cache is an 870ml uncamouflaged lock and lock just to the east of the last visitor's parking spot.

Although permission was granted by the facility for placement of this cache, it would be better to not draw attention to it so strategically parking your vehicle might help hide your activities.

A Frink Labs-approved geocache
