Posing as "Satan." Mephisto approached stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze and agreed to cure Blaze's mentor and adoptive father "Crash" Simpson of cancer in exchange for Blaze's soul. Simpson then died short afterwards performing a stunt. One night after Crash's death, Johnny found himself transformed into a skeletal being with a flaming skull.

Fearing at first that this demonic form was a manifestation of his own evil side, he soon realized that he had bonded with some wholly separate entity. This merger of Johnny Blaze and a demonic force became known as the Ghost Rider, which amused Mephisto greatly. Later, when criminals wounded Barbara Ketch, her brother Dan carried her to a junkyard. With Barbara's innocent blood on his hands, Dan touched a mysterious motorcycle and became the new Ghost Rider. John heard about a new Ghost Rider in New York. Blaze captured the Dan Ketch Ghost Rider. During their clash, a burst of Ghost Rider's Hellfire was conducted through Blaze's shotgun into John himself, who discovered he could now discharge Hellfire from the weapon. Dan and John Blaze later learned that they were brothers. Armed with this shotgun and a mystical motorcycle, John became a mentor of sorts to the new Ghost Rider, trying to guard Dan against evil forces.
